Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - Catholic and Protestant Christians set a sign of rapprochement on Saturday evening at the Ecumenical Church Congress in Frankfurt.

They celebrated four denominational attendance services in compliance with the Corona rules.

Catholics were invited to take part in the evangelical supper, while Protestants, conversely, could celebrate the Catholic Eucharist.

This is viewed critically by the Vatican.

The church president of the inviting Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau, Volker Jung, had recognized this as real ecumenical progress, since it accepted the "mutual participation" in the Lord's Supper.

The chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, Georg Bätzing, also emphasized: "We want to set an example of unity here."

According to biblical tradition, Jesus and his apostles held the Last Supper on the evening before his arrest and execution.

The most important Christian form of cult, the communal communion of the faithful, which the Catholics call the Eucharist, developed from the memory of this.

In addition to many similarities, there are also differences in understanding, so the Catholic Eucharist may only be celebrated by the priest.
