Notice to strawberry lovers: this dessert, which would have been served to Louis XIII during a visit to Lot-et-Garonne, preserves all the flavor of the fruit and can be prepared in no time with a few spices. and a good local wine.

Lot-et-Garonne is the leading strawberry producing department in France.

A tradition that does not date from yesterday, since they have been cultivated there since the 15th century.

But the region's strawberries owe their fame above all to a visit from King Louis XIII in May 1622. While passing through Marmande, the monarch was served for his supper a complete menu embellished with this fruit, including strawberries in red wine and with sugar.

They would have been served to him as a starter, but for the gourmand of the 21st century, they can quite constitute an original dessert, very simple to make.

The recipe for strawberries with red wine and sugar 

Ingredients :

  • 1 kg of strawberries

  • 75 cl of red wine from Lot et Garonne, like a Côte-de-Duras

  • 150 g of sugar

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1 vanilla pod

  • 3 cloves

The stages of preparation:

Start by simmering the wine in a saucepan.

Add the sugar, cinnamon, the seeds of the halved vanilla pod, then the pod, and the cloves.

Pass over low heat after 3 minutes and simmer for about 15 minutes, while stirring.

Let cool. 

3. Clean your strawberries, remove the stems and cut them into quarters, before sprinkling them in bowls of cooled spiced wine.

Place in the fridge for at least 1 hour 30 minutes for them to infuse, before serving.
