Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) congratulates Udo Lindenberg on his upcoming 75th birthday on Monday.

"Udo Lindenberg campaigned in a variety of ways to overcome the wall and to achieve understanding between East and West," said Müller, paying tribute to the rock musician.

"Since reunification, his commitment has been directed against the wall in people's heads: against xenophobia, anti-Semitism and homophobia, but above all for tolerance, respect, peace and a colorful society."

Due to his commitment to a united Germany, the musician received the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin in 2014.

Udo Lindenberg was born on May 17, 1946 in Gronau (Westphalia).

He began his musical career as a drummer and became a rock star with German lyrics.

Songs like “Andrea Doria”, “Cello”, “Girls from East Berlin”, “Special Train to Pankow” and “Horizont” are among the hits from the 1970s and 1980s.
