Mainz (dpa / lrs) - After the completion of countless construction sites in Mainz, the designated State Secretary Katrin Eder (Greens) wants to work towards better commuter connections in local public transport.

This includes, above all, a better rail connection between Mainz and Frankfurt, said the outgoing Mainz Environment and Transport Department head of the German Press Agency.

"The whole of Rhineland-Palatinate is affected by this bottleneck."

In the event of disruptions on this central axis in the Rhine-Main area, delays could occur as far as Saarbrücken.

Better public transport connections for commuters are of crucial importance for climate protection, said Eder. "To be able to shape this in Rhineland-Palatinate is a big task." To this end, she will also hold talks with neighboring Hesse. "In the traffic turnaround, which we need for climate protection, public transport is the backbone." She hopes that after the latest ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court on climate protection, more money will flow into the system.

The newly tailored Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy and Mobility is responsible for public transport with buses and trains, while the Ministry of Economics and Transport retains the authority for road construction and the expansion of the cycle path network.

“That was a political decision,” says Eder.

As a “passionate cyclist”, she would also have liked to continue to look after the topic of cycling.

"But it was right to put the issue of mobility in the climate protection ministry."

She will continue to wear the municipal political glasses in the future, said Eder.

“The municipalities will always have a contact person in me”, for example on the planned municipal climate pact.

In addition, she is also looking forward to the tasks in nature conservation - “this ministry is huge”.

After ten years as a department head of the city of Mainz, the 44-year-old said: "We dug our way through the city once."

The primary goal of all projects has always been to improve the quality of stay in the city and to make mobility more sustainable. "

The cityscape has changed completely in the past ten years, from the hop garden in the old town to the Große Langgasse.

"There are still cars driving there, but there are fewer than before."

"In the event of changes, many can not imagine that it will be better afterwards," said Eder, criticizing her administration, for example the introduction of Tempo 30 in the city center.

"Other cities are also very brave, and that often provokes resistance."

One of the critics is the CDU state chairwoman Julia Klöckner, whom Eder has referred to as the «State Secretary of State».

"I'm not responsible for traffic jams," said Eder dryly.

The smooth road traffic falls into the portfolio of the Ministry of Transport.
