Covid-19 in Taiwan: alert level raised and new restrictions after an increase in cases

After a sharp rise in the number of cases, Taiwan raised the alert level for Taipei and New Taiper City.

The government decreed this Saturday, May 15, new measures.

It is now forbidden to gather more than five people indoors and ten outdoors.

The Taiwanese authorities decreed this Saturday new physical distancing measures for the capital and its region after the confirmation of 180 new

infections

, against 29 cases the day before.

These new measures come the day after the announcement of

the closure of entertainment venues and municipal facilities

.

Only businesses, schools and government offices can remain open.

12 deaths since the start of the pandemic

This peak of contamination worries the authorities of this country which has so far gone through the pandemic relatively unscathed.

We will closely monitor the development of the epidemic in the coming days and adapt [the closures] accordingly, 

" said Minister of Health Chen Shih-chung.

Taiwan

has only recorded 1,500 coronavirus cases and 12 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

A first peak in new cases had already taken place last February when the detection of a cluster in a hospital led to the suspension of the famous Lantern Festival during the Lunar New Year.

This outbreak was quickly brought under control.

However, the current resurgence of cases appears to be larger and more widespread.
