Braunschweig (dpa / lni) - Accompanied by counter-demonstrations, an extraordinary state party conference of the AfD has begun in Braunschweig, with the threat of an exchange of blows between the two blocks of the party.

At the beginning of the AfD federal spokesman Tino Chrupalla warned the more than 600 members present to unite.

"Don't look back anymore, you have to look ahead."

For the party convention convened by district boards, there have been requests to vote against AfD state chief Jens Kestner and three other board members for behavior that is harmful to the party.

Moderate forces in the party are defending themselves against the attempt by the right-wing camp around Kestner to repeat the candidate list for the federal election because of alleged formal errors.

The right camp had lost out on the lineup.

Both Kestner and the former regional chief Armin-Paul Hampel would have no prospect of a return to the Bundestag.

In a speech at the beginning of the party congress, Kestner protested against attempts to split the party.

Debating problems must be constructive, not destructive.

On the grounds that the event hall was overcrowded in view of the Corona regulations, the press was expelled from the hall shortly after the start of the party congress.
