Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - In the future, doctoral students will also be able to do a doctorate in Saxony-Anhalt at high-tech universities of applied sciences.

A corresponding regulation by Science Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) came into force on Friday, as his ministry announced.

"In this way, we are creating more equal opportunities in the science system and strengthening our universities in the competition for bright minds."

The universities of applied sciences have expanded their research in recent years. "Wherever this is sustainable and to a certain extent, it is necessary to open up the path to a doctorate and thus to the promotion of young scientists," said the minister. So far, only universities in Saxony-Anhalt have been able to obtain a doctorate. The state government decided last year with the new higher education law to change that. According to Willingmann, Saxony-Anhalt is one of the first federal states to take this step.

The universities of applied sciences wishing to make use of the right to award doctorates must set up doctoral centers to supervise and support doctoral candidates.

The Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and a joint application from the Harz, Merseburg and Magdeburg-Stendal universities have already applied to the ministry for such a doctoral center.
