Heraklion / Hanover (dpa) - At the start of the Greek tourism season in 2021, Tui resumed business in the country.

The first machines with island vacationers from Germany should arrive in Crete in the morning.

Tui customers landed there on Thursday in order to embark on a cruise on the “Mein Schiff 5” - the first of eight through Greek waters.

On Saturday the Greeks make the official start in tourism.

As the world's largest travel company, Tui had to take a break in the important destination country for more than half a year.

The reason was - as in many other holiday areas - the difficult Corona situation.

Recently, however, the situation has also improved noticeably in Greece.

CFO Sebastian Ebel spoke of a "further milestone" after the Hanoverians had already gradually offered flights and opened hotels for the Balearic Islands and the Algarve.

From the weekend, connections to Greek islands such as Kos, Corfu and Rhodes will also be served.

According to Tui, a negative PCR test that is not older than three days or proof of complete vaccination is necessary for holidaymakers to enter Greece.

"It is now the starting point for the resumption of our business with customers from Germany," said Ebel in Heraklion.

Tourism continues to be of central economic importance in Greece.

"There were also great hardships in Crete."

Now the season can start cautiously, which also helps the gastronomy and other connected sectors.
