Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - The corona pandemic continues to have a firm grip on Frankfurt Airport.

Despite the Easter break, the number of passengers handled at Germany's largest airport remained below the million mark in April.

Compared to April 2019, before the pandemic had massively affected air traffic worldwide, the number of passengers fell by almost 84 percent to just under 984,000, as the MDax-listed airport operator Fraport announced in Frankfurt on Friday.

Compared to April 2020, however, the number of passengers increased by 423 percent.

The month of the previous year was the first in which Fraport had fully felt the consequences of the corona.

Over the first four months of the current year, the number of passengers fell by 69 percent to more than 3.4 million - compared to the same period in 2019, this was a decrease of 83 percent.

The freight business continues to develop strongly, for which the monthly high of 201,661 tons of handled cargo was registered in April 2021.

That was 42.7 percent more than a year ago and 13.1 percent more than two years ago.

For the first time since the outbreak of the Corona crisis, Fraport recorded consistently high growth rates at its international airports due to the low passenger comparison figures from April 2020. All Fraport airports from South America to Turkey to China, however, remained below the pre-crisis level.
