Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The most famous catchy tune of the Mainz Carnival contains melody quotes from a largely forgotten opera that has now been digitized by the Mainz City Scientific Library.

The handwritten score of the opera "Le Brasseur de Preston" (The Brewer of Preston) by Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) was written around 1840 and was later given the addition: "Cradle of the Mainz Narrhalla March", as the city of Mainz am Announced Friday.

The opera from 1838 was performed two years later in the Mainz theater.

The composer Carl Zulehner, who lives in Mainz, used three melodies from the 2nd and 3rd act of the opera and created the Narhallamarsch, which was initially referred to as the "Old Mainz Jocus March".

The Mainz-born actor Rudolf Frank gave the manuscript to the city of Mainz in 1962 on the occasion of the two thousandth anniversary celebrations in 1962. Perhaps the now digitized score would be a stimulus to rediscover the opera, suggested the city.
