Schwerin (dpa / mv) - According to their own information, debt counseling in the state recorded high demand in 2020.

More than 17,600 people had sought help in the advice centers despite contact restrictions, said the League of Central Welfare Associations.

Advice on new insolvency rules and seizure protection accounts was particularly frequent.

The result shows that debt counseling is an indispensable offer of social counseling and "how important it is to maintain and strengthen the existing counseling structure - even beyond the time of Corona," says league chairman Steffen Feldmann.

The background to his appeal is that the consulting landscape in MV should be reorganized and the funding of the associations should be made more transparent - an aftereffect of the financial affairs around some of the charities.

The league fears cuts due to the law.

In Ludwigslust-Parchim, for example, there is a proposal to reduce positions for advice on addiction, marital problems, the disabled or debtors: to 18 instead of the previous 22.4 - a reduction of around 20 percent.

The spokesman for the circle emphasized that this had not yet been decided.

The topic is currently being voted on.

The district council could deal with it in June at the earliest.

The league appeals to the state and municipalities, which share the funding, to secure the advice centers.

You would have to be able to absorb the effects of the corona for many people - wage waivers, short-time working, job loss and credit burdens.

For the first few months of this year, the advice centers reported even more influx than in 2020. This trend will probably continue in view of the long lockdown, it said.
