Berlin (dpa) - Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil wants to extend relief for companies with short-time work until the end of the year.

Trade, gastronomy and the event industry still suffered a lot from the lockdown, the SPD politician told the "Handelsblatt".

There are also difficulties in some companies because semiconductors, for example, are missing.

"That's why I want us to extend the full scope of short-time working until the end of the year."

To this end, he has drawn up a draft regulation that the government is currently voting on.

Specifically, it is about social security contributions for lost working hours in the case of short-time work, which will be covered 100 percent by the state until June 30th.

Heil wants to extend this regulation.

Otherwise only half of the contributions would be paid.

Heil had already stated that short-time work was very expensive for the Federal Employment Agency and the federal budget.

This will prevent the “return of mass unemployment”, which would be much more expensive for the state and society.

According to an estimate by the economic research institute Ifo, 2.7 million people were still on short-time work in April.
