Cologne (dpa) - The sports medicine specialist Wildor Hollmann, who was still active as a lecturer well into old age, is dead. He died on Thursday at the age of 96 with his family, the German Sport University Cologne announced on Friday as its rector Hollmann had acted at times.

The world-famous internist, cardiologist and researcher has not recovered from a coronavirus infection, said the German Society for Sports Medicine and Prevention, which Hollmann had appointed honorary president.

When he was more than 90 years old, the scientist offered lectures at the Sport University in Cologne, which were extremely popular with many students.

According to the information, more than 1000 diploma theses and more than 200 doctoral theses were written under his supervision.

"I want to turn so-called technical idiots into people who are familiar with general life," Hollmann told the German press agency in 2017.

Hollmann held several high-ranking offices in his career.

Among other things, he was President of the German Sports Medical Association, President of the World Association for Sports Medicine and from 1994 to 1997 President of the German Olympic Society.
