Saarbrücken / Waldmohr (dpa / lrs) - The beekeeping association Rhineland-Palatinate sees the business with the rental of beehives rather critically.

Especially in times when there is less insect food, the honeybees displace the wild bees, said state chairman Klaus Eisele of the German press agency.

It's about biodiversity.

"Wild bees are an indicator of biodiversity, honey bees are farm animals."

From Eisele's point of view, it makes more sense to invest in industrial nature conservation and plant projects.

The spokesman for the beekeepers in Saarland, Markus Lay, only considers renting to be problematic "if the care of the bees takes a back seat or if companies support 'greenwashing'".

In Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, Michael Wirth from Waldmohr rents out beehives, tends the colonies and hurls honey for those interested.

More than 30 predominantly commercial customers now use the offer, including building contractors, hoteliers, lawyers and IT service providers.

In addition to feeling good, customers receive around 30 kilograms of honey per colony, which they can then use for their own marketing purposes.

However, Wirth distances itself from those companies that only aim to lend themselves an environmentally friendly and responsible image when renting bees.

He only set up his beehives where he has the feeling that the tenants actually want to contribute to a sustainable future and show the flag against the bee deaths.
