Heavy fighting has raged again in Afghanistan in the past few weeks.

With the start of the official withdrawal of troops from the USA and other NATO countries on May 1, the Taliban launched new offensives in several provinces.

Both sides declared that they had inflicted heavy losses on the enemy.

From 1996 until the US-led intervention in 2001, the Islamists controlled large parts of Afghanistan.
