Halle (dpa / sa) - In Halle there were two meetings with a total of about 400 participants on Thursday evening due to the escalation of violence in the Gaza conflict.

As a spokeswoman for the police announced on Friday, around 350 people came to a demonstration entitled “For religious freedom - against Israeli apartheid policy” and around 50 people came to a second demonstration under the motto “We stand with Israel”.

Accordingly, both meetings were "largely calm".

Only "here and there" are said to have been provocations and dismissals.

A complaint was also filed for resisting law enforcement officers and for stealing an Israel flag.

However, the flag was returned that same evening.

On Thursday, the state of Saxony-Anhalt had already increased the protection of Jewish institutions.

In the Middle East, the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis has been escalating for days.

Palestinian militants have targeted rocket attacks in Israel.

Israel blames the Hamas organization for this.

The Israeli security forces responded during the night with air strikes on targets in the densely Palestinian-populated Gaza Strip.
