Local media such as NDTV and foreign media reported that 18 elephants, believed to have been killed by lightning strikes, were found in northeastern India.

Reportedly, on the 13th local time, more than 18 wild elephants were found dead on a hill in a forest reserve in the Nagaon district of Northeastern India.

An official from a local forest conservation group said, "14 were dead on the hillside and 4 were found under the hillside."

NDTV cited an anonymous official and reported that initial investigations revealed that the elephants appeared to have been struck and killed.

"It is very painful from this accident," said Suclabaidia, a parrimal, who is the Minister of Environment and Forests in Assam Province.

India currently has about 27,000 elephants, of which 21% are estimated to live in Assam.
