A Vietnamese woman died this Sunday from Covid-19 in Laos.

This is the first death recorded in the country as a result of this new disease, according to official media.

The death of the 53-year-old woman has been confirmed by the authorities.

The victim worked at a karaoke club in Vientiane, the capital, and had health problems, including diabetes.

According to the

Vientiane Times

, this explains why his condition deteriorated very quickly.

A source of contamination in April

Laos seemed to have escaped the pandemic in 2020. But the country went from 49 cases of coronavirus per day in early April to 1,302 in less than a month after the discovery of a source of contamination in a village.

The tracing made it possible to trace the trail to a Laotian who had come into contact with Thais and workers returned from Thailand, in the middle of the third wave of the epidemic.

Vientiane had been contained, with authorities forbidding residents to leave their homes except for shopping and going to the hospital.

Travel had been banned between the capital and the province.

Laos is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia.

According to experts, official Covid-19 figures in 2020 were likely low there due to a lack of testing.
