Munich (dpa) - At the VW commercial vehicle holding Traton, the good start to the year also had a clearly positive impact on incoming orders.

Orders climbed by more than half compared to the same period in the previous year to around 81,700 trucks and buses, as the holding company with the brands MAN, Scania and the South American VW Caminhoes e Onibus, which is listed in the SDax small-cap index, announced on Monday in Munich when it presented detailed figures.

"81,700 orders within one quarter are the best result that the Traton Group has achieved so far," said CEO Matthias Gründler.

The big plus is due to the strong truck business.

In contrast, the bus business was still burdened by the effects of the corona crisis and has shrunk significantly.

The bottom line in the first quarter was a surplus attributable to shareholders of 129 million euros after 96 million euros a year earlier.

While sales rose by 15 percent to around 6.5 billion euros, the adjusted operating profit tripled to 516 million euros, and the adjusted operating return on sales was 7.9 percent.

Traton confirmed the forecast raised in April.

The VW truck and bus subsidiary expects an operating return on sales of 5.0 to 7.0 percent for the current year.

However, costs for upcoming job cuts at MAN and effects from the planned takeover of the US truck manufacturer Navistar are excluded.
