May 10, 2021 The storm on the Hollywood Foreign Press shows no signs of abating and indeed, despite the reforms adopted last week, the NBC has announced that next year it will not air the Golden Globes ceremony while some stars of the first magnitude parade. : among these, after Scarlett Johannsson, also Tom Cruise who today returned to the sender the three statuettes won for "Jerry Maguire", "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Magnolia".

The announcement of the network leaves the Hfpa at a crossroads: either to move forward next year without a broadcaster as a partner, or to move more decisively to adopt more radical reforms. Last week, meanwhile, the streaming giants (which emerged as major production studios during the pandemic) Netflix and Amazon had pulled back, asking the organization for "more significant" measures in terms of composition and ethical rules.

Position endorsed by the NBC. "We continue to believe that the Hfpa wants to undertake significant reforms. But changes of this magnitude take time and work and we firmly believe that the association must do things right. For this we will not broadcast the 2022 awards but we think we can do it in the January 2023 ", announced the network in a statement.

The Hollywood-based association of foreign journalists had gotten into the blizzard after a Los AngelesTimes investigation published on the eve of this year's ceremony. Accused of being a "caste" that does not include black journalists, the association adopted a plan a few days ago under which it undertakes to increase the number of black reporters, while introducing restrictions on gifts by of the studies and payments that members have so far received to serve on its committees.

But to many, including the leaders of Amazon and Netflix as well as many stars, not only the contents but also the time that the Hfpa has given itself to increase its composition by 50% seemed unacceptable (currently 86 journalists, none of the such as black) over the next 18 months. Also irritating was the fact that 10% of the organization abstained or did not participate in the vote.
