The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) has determined that a group of Russian hackers was involved in the case where one of the largest pipelines in the United States was hit by a cyber attack and was forced to suspend the supply of gasoline and other products.

The pipeline is aiming to recover by this weekend, but prolonged supply outages could have implications for economic activity.

On the 7th of this month, the system of the "colonial pipeline" that supplies gasoline etc. from Texas in the southern part of the United States to the eastern part was hit by a cyber attack from the outside, and the pipeline was forced to suspend the supply.

The cyber attack was caused by a computer virus "ransomware" that demands a ransom, and the FBI = Federal Bureau of Investigation released a statement on the 10th that the crime involved the Russian hacker group "Dark Side".

At a press conference, President Biden said, "We take this issue very seriously. We will pursue the ransomware attack on a global scale," and said that the government would solve the problem.

The Colonial Pipeline is one of the largest pipelines in the United States, reaching nearly 9000 kilometers in length, supplying gasoline and jet fuel from Texas to the eastern part of the country, such as New York, which is a major consumer.

The pipeline side is aiming for recovery by this weekend, but if the supply suspension is prolonged, there will be concerns about the impact on economic activities.
