On Monday, the UN Security Council met urgently to discuss the confrontations in Jerusalem, but its members did not agree to issue a joint declaration, as the United States considered it "inappropriate" to send a public message at this stage, according to diplomats.

Sources, who preferred not to be named, told Anadolu Agency that the draft statement prepared by Tunisia in cooperation with a number of European members of the Security Council did not include any condemnation of the Israeli attacks on the Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

She added that the statement was only calling on Israel to stop its attacks on the Palestinians, and to respect the principle of freedom of worship and the practice of religious rites for Palestinians in Al-Aqsa Mosque without fear or intimidation.

Act quickly

For his part, President of the Security Council, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun, said ahead of the Security Council's closed session on the Jerusalem events, that council members should act quickly.

The Chinese diplomat tweeted that he should urge the council to de-escalate tensions and reaffirm commitment to the principle of a two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli).

Since the beginning of the month of Ramadan, the city of Jerusalem has witnessed attacks by the Israeli police forces and settlers, in the area of Bab al-Amud, the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, and the vicinity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Israeli occupation forces stormed the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque this morning, and attacked Palestinian worshipers with rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear gas.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society announced - in a statement - that more than 305 Palestinians had been injured since the morning during clashes with the Israeli occupation forces in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the vicinity of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Hundreds of Palestinians had gathered in the Al-Aqsa Mosque at dawn, to prevent any Israeli storming of it.
