Kiel (dpa / lno) - nest boxes for birds, wildflower meadows and green roofs - Schleswig-Holsten wants to manage its properties in a more natural way in the future.

The Ministry of Finance announced on Monday that the country wanted to contribute to the conservation and development of biodiversity.

To this end, the department worked out a biodiversity strategy with the building management company GMSH.

«In addition to climate protection, species protection is one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Every piece of land can make a contribution, ”said Finance Minister Monika Heinold (Greens).

While in the past, functionality and economic efficiency had been the focus of construction measures and management services, in the future the development of near-natural flora and fauna with corresponding habitats will also play an important role, it said.

The GMSH, which manages the properties for the state, awards contracts for the maintenance of outdoor facilities for around 200 properties.

When contracts expire, near-natural management should be taken into account in new contracts.

In Schleswig-Holstein almost half of all animal and plant species are on the red list.

"Public areas and buildings can do a lot to provide living space for animals and plants," emphasized Heinold.
