Kiel (dpa / lno) - The state government has initiated the allocation of construction waste from the dismantling of the Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant to two landfills in the east of the country.

According to this, the Lübeck-Niemark plant will have to absorb up to 1,410 tons by the end of 2022 and the Johannistal landfill in Gremersdorf (Ostholstein district) up to 900 tons.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the responsible state office sent the allocation notices to the landfills on Monday.

There is considerable resistance in Lübeck to the inclusion of waste released under radiation protection law. The citizenship rejected the project. Because the Akw operator and the responsible waste management company could not find a landfill ready for acceptance, the state resorted to the last resort of allocation. "It is regrettable that it has not yet been possible to find a voluntary solution for the dumping of non-radioactive waste from nuclear power plants in the country," said Secretary of State for the Environment Tobias Goldschmidt.

The ministry has repeatedly stressed that the waste is harmless.

It's about mineral wool, rubble and insulation that cannot be reused.

Initially, there was talk of up to 18,000 tonnes for the two mentioned landfills that could accumulate by the end of 2022.

So far, however, according to detailed calculations, the amounts now allocated have remained, said a spokesman for the ministry.

The rest will be decided later.

Landfills in Wiershop (Duchy of Lauenburg district), Harrislee (Schleswig-Flensburg district) and Großenaspe (Segeberg district) are also possible.

The reactors in Brunsbüttel and Krümmel have long been offline.

The last Akw (Brokdorf) will also be switched off by the end of the year.
