Potsdam (dpa / bb) - In order to take action against criminal machinations with pharmaceuticals, competencies and powers are to be pooled at the Potsdam public prosecutor's office in Brandenburg.
From June, investigations into particularly serious crimes in the area of health crimes are to be carried out at the public prosecutor's office responsible for combating serious economic and environmental crime, as the Ministry of Justice announced on Monday.
There are reasonable indications that the trade in counterfeit drugs and medical devices is increasing, the ministry said.
Counterfeit medicines and the illegal trade in medicines endanger human health and life.
These include, for example, the sale of sexual enhancers on the Internet by illegal, unauthorized providers.
The establishment of the nationwide responsible department in Potsdam underlines the special importance that the integrity of the health system has for the Brandenburg judiciary, said Minister Susanne Hoffmann (CDU).
"Last but not least, the pandemic has shown how important it is that citizens have confidence in the reliability of medical care."

The Brandenburg drug company Lunapharm was banned from the manufacture and trade of drugs at the beginning of 2019 after it became known, among other things, that the company had been purchasing drugs for several years from a Greek pharmacy that was not authorized to wholesale.
