Rostock (dpa) - According to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Economics Minister Harry Glawe (CDU), the German shipbuilding industry is still dependent on federal help.

The financing of new construction projects is a major challenge for the industry, said Glawe on Monday before the 12th National Maritime Conference in Rostock.

The companies are not in a position to cover their high and long-term construction financing without financial aid.

In view of the reluctance of banks and insurers, federal aid is necessary.

Thousands of jobs were attached to maritime construction projects, not only in the shipyards, but also with suppliers.

"A large part of the added value also takes place outside of the shipyards and, above all, in federal states outside the German coastal states," said Glawe.

The maritime industry is therefore not only responsible for economic growth in the north.

The 12th National Maritime Conference begins on Monday with more than 1000 participants.

Due to the ongoing corona pandemic, it will mainly be held digitally.
