Karlsruhe (dpa) - The 16th German Midwives Congress began on Monday with over 1200 participants, which this year aims to address the needs of women and children from the beginning of pregnancy to the end of breastfeeding.

This means that the event is embedded in the national health goal “Health all around childbirth” issued by the Federal Ministry of Health, said the President of the German Midwives Association (DHV), Ulrike Geppert-Orthofer, at the start of the digital congress.

The overarching topic depicts the entire midwifery care sheet.

Geppert-Orthofer again pointed out that the working conditions for the obstetricians had to be massively improved - both in the clinics and in the freelance sector.

The shortage of midwives has been an issue in Germany for years and one-to-one care during childbirth as required by the DHV is a long way off.

With a view to the Bundestag elections in September, further demands are to be made to politicians by the end of May / beginning of June.

In a greeting, Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) had previously renewed his announcement that around 100 million euros a year would be raised over the next three years to support midwives.

Among other things, around 600 more jobs are to be created for obstetricians in clinics.
