Rostock (dpa / mv) - Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has called on the maritime industry to use the potential of shipping for a more climate and environmentally friendly future.

"With the German and European expertise in shipbuilding, we have the opportunity to make Europe the lead market for climate-friendly, resource- and cost-saving technologies," said Merkel on Monday in a greeting to the 12th National Maritime Conference in Rostock.

A sustainable maritime industry could thus become an example of recognizing and using opportunities even in crises.

Merkel emphasized the role of Europe in international challenges.

It is important to assert oneself on the highly competitive world market.

"After all, we are not only dealing with partners, but also with competitors, or rather with competitors."

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) had previously announced that he would take action at EU level against Far Eastern competition in shipbuilding.

"There are countries that are trying very clearly and sometimes aggressively to monopolize or dominate parts of civil shipbuilding, and that is why we will not just let this development pass by."
