Aachen (dpa / lnw) - Municipalities in the current lignite area in the Rhineland want to become a nationwide hydrogen model region.

The aim of the cooperation is to create, among other things, new jobs and added value on site, announced the Aachen Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday.

A project office based at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce is to support the activities.

An application for funding as a model region to the Federal Ministry of Transport is planned.

It should also be about opportunities for regional purchasing cooperations.

“It would be conceivable, for example, to jointly procure hydrogen-powered vehicles for municipal and communal companies in the future,” explained the IHK.

Hydrogen as an energy carrier in the region should be obtained from renewable energies as far as possible and, for the most part, also be consumed locally.

The city and city region of Aachen, as well as the districts of Düren, Euskirchen and Heinsberg are involved.

Representatives of the municipalities emphasized that the region is strong in research and can also apply it.

The generation of electricity from lignite in the Rhenish Revier should stop by 2038 at the latest.

A third of the 9,000 jobs directly affected in the lignite industry will disappear in the next few years.
