Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - The Frankfurt cultural department head Ina Hartwig (SPD) has honored the late architect Helmut Jahn as one of the few world-famous German architects.

With the Messeturm, he was able to bring the high-rise type closer to the people of Frankfurt emotionally, said Hartwig after a message from the city on Monday.

"The elegant and classic shape with base, shaft and crown made it possible to identify positively with the height development of one's own city, which ultimately led to our famous skyline," explained Hartwig.

Since then, all architects of high-rise buildings in Frankfurt have had to be measured against this high-quality model.

Frankfurt owes a lot to Jahn.

Jahn was 81 years old in a bicycle accident in Chicago on Saturday.

Born in 1940 in Zirndorf near Nuremberg, Jahn became famous for his bold high-rise buildings and office towers.

In addition to the exhibition tower, Jahn also created the Sony Center in Berlin, for example.

He also designed several airport terminals around the world and most recently worked in the Emirate of Qatar.
