Hildesheim (dpa / lni) - The Harz waterworks are expecting another drought summer in many places in Lower Saxony.

According to investigations by the scientists at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research, this mainly affects northeast and southeast Lower Saxony - where there was already a drought in April and May, said the technical director of the Harzwasserwerke, Christoph Donner, on Monday.

For the fourth year in a row, the reservoirs in the western Harz are filled “well below average” and the water table has also fallen.

The drinking water supply is not in danger.

“We prepared ourselves for the persistent drought early on,” stressed Donner.

Early forecasts about the course of the year are important for water management: "An early trend statement helps everyone involved in the water cycle."

Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) said that in future “climatic and hydrological changes will have to be brought more into focus”.

He also stated: "We all need water to live, it is our most important asset."

Donner called for a “sustainable use of water as a resource”.
