Wiesbaden (dpa / sn) - Hanna and Matteo were the most common first names for newborns in Saxony-Anhalt in the past year.

This emerges from a survey that the Society for the German Language (GfdS) from Wiesbaden presented on Monday.

Second place among the girls went to Mia, followed by Frieda.

There was no change on this ranking compared to 2019.

Among the boys, Matteo climbed from 14th place to the top, Paul worked his way up from third to second place and Oskar, who was sixth in 2019, landed in third place.

The GfdS relies on data from more than 700 registry offices with almost a million name entries transmitted.

"This recorded almost 90 percent of all names given in Germany in 2020," declared the Society for the German Language.
