Dresden / Leipzig (dpa) - With the planned expansion of Leipzig Airport, the Saxon Greens are pushing for better noise protection for residents.

The parliamentary group had commissioned a medical noise report to investigate the effects of aircraft noise on the people in the catchment area of the second largest German freight airport.

"The report shows quite clearly that the expansion plans are at the expense of the people," said the economic policy spokesman, Gerhard Liebscher, on Monday.

The number of night flights at Leipzig / Halle Airport should not increase any further. Instead, additional flights would have to be handled during the day. In addition, changed take-off and landing fees would have to be levied for particularly old and noisy aircraft, Liebscher demanded. This "penalty fee" should increase the pressure on the airlines to buy more modern machines. In addition, active noise protection should be improved - for example by changing approach procedures.

The expert opinion was drawn up by Professor Thomas Münzel from the University of Mainz.

The doctor emphasized that sleep disorders caused by aircraft noise lead to vascular diseases.

Airplanes taking off and landing cause noise peaks that are particularly stressful.

The corona pandemic slowed global air traffic - that is positive for people.

A return to the level of the pre-crisis year 2019 must be prevented, according to Münzel.

Leipzig / Halle Airport is to be expanded considerably.

Among other things, DHL is planning to expand the logistics hub from 60 to 100 parking spaces.

That would lead to a significant increase in take-offs and landings.
