An explosion occurred on Monday morning at the power plant that supplies the metallurgical plant of Société Le Nickel (SLN) in New Caledonia.

An employee, seriously injured in the incident, died.

The explosion occurred at 8 a.m. (local time) at the fuel-fired power station.

The accident took place at one of the four boilers, during a restart test phase after an overhaul of this aging and polluting plant, built around fifty years ago.

An open investigation into the explosion

The victim is an agent of Enercal, the company that manages the 150 Megawatt unit.

She succumbed to her serious injuries after being hospitalized.

In a statement, the company SLN sent its support to those close to him.

The origin of the explosion is now under investigation.

"All the technical recommendations have been put in place to secure the site," Nicolas de Cointet, director of operations at Enercal, told reporters.

“The facilities are now safe.

SLN is New Caledonia's largest private employer, and produced 47,000 tonnes of ferronickel in 2020.
