Wiesbaden (dpa) - Emma and Emil were the most frequently chosen first names for newborns in Saxony in the past year.

This was announced by the Society for the German Language (GfdS) in Wiesbaden on Monday.

In the girls' category, Hanna came in second, followed by Mia. Ben and Matteo were among the most popular among the boys.

Emma and Hanna swapped places, Ben and Mia were each in fifth place in 2019.

Saxony is in the east trend, with a different order and a difference: for the girls, Hannah or Hanna led before Mia and Emma, ​​boys were called Mat (h) eo or Matt (h) eo, Emil and Oskar or Oscar instead of Ben.

In the west, Emma landed third behind Emilia and Sophia or Sofia, with the boys the parents Noah, Leon and Paul favored.

Nationwide the most common first names were Emilia and Noah.

The GfdS relies on data from more than 700 registry offices with almost a million name entries transmitted.

"This recorded almost 90 percent of all names given in Germany in 2020," declared the Society for the German Language.
