Mülheim (dpa / lnw) - In the coming weeks, car and train drivers in the Ruhr area will have to be prepared for route closures between Essen and Duisburg that will last several days.

The reason is construction work by Deutsche Bahn, among other things because of the tank truck fire under a railway bridge a few months ago in Mülheim.

As the Deutsche Bahn announced on Monday in Düsseldorf, the first closure of the A40 starts this Wednesday (May 12) at 8 p.m. and lasts until Friday evening (May 14), 10 p.m. The second blockage is planned for Pentecost, from Friday (May 21st), 8:00 p.m. to Tuesday (May 25th), 5:00 a.m. On the following weekend, the blocking begins on Friday (May 28th) at 8:00 p.m. and ends on Monday (May 31st) at 5:00 a.m. In addition, a ten-day lockdown is planned from August 13 to 23. It is blocked in both directions between Kreuz Kaiserberg and Mülheim-Styrum.

During the work, abutments, i.e. structural engineering, will be built for two additional temporary bridges over the motorway.

This requires extensive work with heavy equipment.

During the closures, large mobile cranes lift, among other things, drilling rigs weighing up to 100 tons onto the construction site - and later back down again.

46 new bored piles with a diameter of more than one meter will each be built 26 meters deep into the ground.

The railway line between Essen and Duisburg is also affected.

For this Thursday (May 13), Deutsche Bahn announced train cancellations and diversions between Essen and Duisburg in both directions between 2 a.m. and 4 p.m.

At Pentecost, the section will then be completely closed, also due to construction work in connection with the commissioning of a new electronic signal box in Duisburg.

The full closure begins on Friday (May 21) at 9 p.m. and lasts until Wednesday (May 26) at 5 a.m.

On May 30th, between 1 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the section there will be more train cancellations and diversions.

Another full closure of the main line is planned from August 15 to August 20 in order to lift the two temporary bridges.
