Meerbusch (dpa / lnw) - An overturned drinks van caused a sea of shards and nine kilometers of backwater at the Meerbusch motorway junction.

The van driver had apparently tackled the change from the A44 to the A57 on Monday with too much enthusiasm.

The 7.5-ton truck tipped over and about 100 crates of drinks fell on the road, as a police spokesman reported.

In order to remove the broken pieces, in which several drivers took part, the motorway had to be partially closed.

The truck driver was heading towards Cologne when the mishap happened.

The backwater reached as far as Krefeld.
