A baby whale got stranded in a lock on the Thames on Sunday, southwest London.

The small cetacean, a 4m long Minke's whale, was rescued after a few hours of intervention, reports the

.

The animal was spotted by passers-by around 7 p.m. stuck in the lock located in the town of Richmond.

Rescuers arrived on site around 9 p.m.

Helped by firefighters, specialized divers and British police, they intervened for several hours to move the whale and dislodge it from its prison.

“We couldn't believe our eyes when we saw the poor beast,” a young resident told the

BBC

“It's not every day that something like this happens in Richmond.

Once dislodged, the small cetacean, injured in the incident, was towed to safety.

Minke's whales usually swim in waters north of the Atlantic and Pacific.
