Berlin (dpa) - In the middle of the corona pandemic, the sickness rate among employees has dropped to a record low.

At Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), for example, it was lower in the first quarter than it has been in 13 years, according to data from the health insurance fund available to the German Press Agency.

In the first three months of the year, the sickness rate was 3.8 percent.

In the first quarter of 2020 it was 5.1 percent, in 2019 4.8 and 2018 5.2 percent of working hours.

TK boss Jens Baas said: "The number of days absent has decreased in almost all diagnoses, especially colds."

The flu epidemic failed to materialize.

Otherwise she usually ensures an increased sick leave rate every two years in February.

"It turns out that the distance and hygiene rules as well as the limited contact options also prevent the spread of other infectious agents," said Baas.

According to the data, the diagnosis of Covid-19 plays a subordinate role in the sick leave of the employed compared to the other diagnoses.

TK recorded a total of 1.08 million sick leave in the first quarter, of which 9381 were due to Covid-19.

For the current evaluation, TK evaluated the certificates of incapacity for work of its approximately 5.4 million insured workers.
