Berlin (dpa) - According to an industry survey, the competition for charging stations is growing for drivers of electric cars.

Half a year ago, 13 cars nationwide had to share a publicly accessible charging point, now there are 17, as the Association of the Automotive Industry announced.

The background to this is that, supported by high purchase premiums, significantly more electric cars have been on the streets for months.

"While almost 60,000 new electric cars are registered in Germany every month, the number of publicly accessible charging points is only growing by just under 1000 per month," said Association President Hildegard Müller.

That is not enough.

Twice as much is necessary.

Private charging facilities are not taken into account in the survey, as they are not recorded centrally.

The proportion of fast charging stations is also not specified.

A central register for private charging points is urgently needed, said Müller.

"This is the only way we can get a complete picture of the charging infrastructure in Germany and the expansion can be driven forward in a targeted manner."

More coordination and networking of the various charging options remains an important task for all municipalities.
