Hamburg (dpa) - On May 20, the writer Wolfgang Borchert (1921-1947) would have been 100 years old.

On this occasion, the Hamburg University Library is showing a new permanent exhibition that makes the author's estate and his study accessible to the public.

"The Wolfgang Borchert room in the old building of the Hamburg State and University Library has been an insider tip among those interested in literature since Borchert's mother Hertha bequeathed her son's estate to the library in 1976," the library announced.

On his 100th birthday, the estate, consisting of his furniture, his books, tobacco pipe, the famous kitchen clock and many other objects, is moving: On May 11, the “Borchert Box”, a glass case with two, will be opened in the main library building Rooms in which the new exhibition «Dissonances.

“We would like to enable a new generation of readers to have initial contact with Borchert and at the same time present new things to those who know the author and work well,” said curator Konstantin Ulmer.

The “Borchert Box” is planned as a permanent offer and will be accessible seven days a week until midnight when the library is back to normal.

In addition, a large part of the exhibition - in addition to “Borchert's Room”, the virtual “Borchert's Hamburg” card and information about the author's short and intense life and work - are accessible online via the exhibition website.

The "Borchert-Bot", a poem machine whose artificial intelligence was trained with the anniversary celebrity's texts, can also be used on a touchscreen on site as well as on the device at home.

The exhibition complements the “Hamburg reads Borchert” festival, which opens on May 17th.
