Erfurt (dpa / th) - Because he is said to have blown up an ATM in Erfurt, a man will be tried at the regional court starting Monday.

The now 45-year-old is said to have stolen about 125,000 euros in the act in February of last year, the court said.

He is charged, among other things, with causing an explosive explosion.

A previously unknown accomplice is also said to have been involved.

There was damage to property amounting to around 70,000 euros.

The ATM was in a supermarket.

ATM explosions are not a mass phenomenon in Thuringia.

"We are affected, but it is currently not a focus," said a spokesman for the state police department on request.

However, there have been isolated cases in the past year in which thieves tampered with ATMs in order to get cash.

The police had informed the press in 2020 about at least nine cases of ATM blasts throughout Thuringia.
