Helgoland (dpa / lno) - If you have friends on Helgoland who offer you a bed, you can travel to the holiday island, which is closed to tourists due to the corona, in the coming week.

The Pinneberg district, to which Helgoland belongs, relaxes the strict regulations for the island in the North Sea from May 10th to 16th.

However, visitors must be able to spend the night with their friends or relatives free of charge, as the district stipulated in a general decree on Saturday.

Another requirement for a trip to Germany's only offshore island is a negative corona test result.

So far, only relatives from Heligoland could come to visit.

The Pinneberg district justifies the strict corona rules for Heligoland with the fact that the consequences of the spread of infection on the island are much more serious than on the mainland.

The capacities of intensive care medicine on Heligoland are only available to a limited extent and are not designed for a large number of seriously ill people.

The transport of sick or suspicious people back to the mainland is only possible under extremely difficult conditions.
