Meppen (dpa / lno) - VfB Lübeck has grabbed the last straw in the relegation battle of the 3rd soccer league.

With a 2-0 (0-0) on Sunday at their direct competitor SV Meppen, the Schleswig-Holsteiners got the theoretical chance of staying in the class.

Of all people, Thorben Deters (55th), whose father Bernd is legendary in Emsland, took the lead.

In addition, Martin Röser (84th) met with a penalty.

After their first success in five games, VfB remains in 19th place and needs two more wins to dream of being rescued.

In the last home game, VfB Lübeck will face FSV Zwickau on Monday next week (7 p.m.).

VfB coach Rolf-Martin Landerl brought three new forces in Deters, Sven Mende and Soufian Benyamina. The focus was initially on goalkeeper Lukas Raeder, who parried strongly against Dejan Bozic (9th) and Luka Tankulic (10th). Only after half an hour did the guests come up, had more possession and acted courageously forwards. But the best chance had Meppens Marcus Piossek, who failed because of the again shiny Raeder (38.).

After all, Sebastian Hertner sent a sign of life from Lübeck before the break when he hit the outside post.

VfB's courage was rewarded after 55 minutes: Deters appeared in front of the hosts' housing and the Meppen native took the opportunity to score his second goal of the season.

The third was almost added, but his shot hit the crossbar after 68 minutes.

In the closing stages, the stable Lübeckers came under hardly any pressure and even made the 2-0 six minutes before the end: Röser converted a penalty after Tim Kircher was fouled.
