- With the help of modern technology and digital solutions, we hope to be able to warn road users, says Torbjörn Biding, investigator at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Even today, there are navigation systems in cars that can warn you that you are approaching an unguarded railway crossing.

Now it is also important to get information that a train is approaching the place where you are.

The Swedish Transport Administration is currently working, together with train operators and the technology industry, to build up such a system.

The idea is also that there should be an app with the same function for mobile phones.

SVT Nyheter Öst and Uppdrag granskning have previously reported on the problems and dangers of unattended level crossings.

In January 2019, a fatal accident occurred on the stretch between Kisa and Rimforsa in Östergötland.

That level crossing had no barriers or sound and light signals.

On the Swedish Transport Administration's list, there are 6,500 level crossings that in some way need to be remedied.

Of these, 3,500 are unattended, ie there are no barriers and no warning signals are heard or flashing when trains approach.

Building barriers in every such place would be expensive and that is one of the reasons why the Swedish Transport Administration is now looking at whether it is possible to supplement with an electronic solution.

Technology to warn of road traffic incidents already exists. Now it is time to adapt it to the conditions of the railway. At the end of the year, Torbjörn Biding hopes that there will be a prototype, which can be tested in reality next year.
