Hamburg / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - According to a study, there are enormous differences in garbage, water and wastewater charges in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

If a 100 liter ton of household garbage costs 919.88 euros when emptied weekly in Rostock, in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen it is more than three times as much at 3,016.29 euros.

In the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, 1184.04 euros would have to be paid annually, the Association of North German Housing Companies (VNW) announced on Sunday.

The public debate is always about rents that are too high - but the price trend in fees hardly plays a role.

"The ancillary housing costs have long since developed into a second rent," said VNW director Andreas Breitner.

In the study, the association also examined the charges for water and wastewater.

Like a red thread runs through all the results that in the western districts consumers are asked to pay considerably less than in the east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, said Breitner.

In the district of Vorpommern-Rügen the mean value (median) for the water and wastewater fee is 5.16 euros per cubic meter, in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg it is only 3.94 euros.

All three eastern counties would be well ahead of the western part of the country.

Breitner admitted that the different geographical locations, the infrastructure, the population and the size as well as the composition of the housing stock made it difficult to compare the regions.

"Nevertheless, the sometimes considerable differences raise questions about the calculation of personnel and material costs, for example," he said.

The study revealed steep price increases in recent years: Between 2018 and 2020, garbage fees in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen rose by 14.7 percent and in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg by 10.7 percent.

"In most counties, the fee increases were well above the general rate of price increases," said Breitner.

"Here the public sector is the price driver."

Breitner called for "full transparency" in terms of garbage, water and sewage charges.
