Erfurt (dpa / th) - The left university politician Christian Schaft has called for a free Corona test offer at Thuringian universities for students. "If events do not take place remotely or in online formats, the highest possible level of security must be guaranteed for the teachers and students," said Schaft of the German Press Agency. In his opinion, the universities should provide the students with qualified corona protective masks such as FFP2 or surgical masks free of charge and make test offers. “The spatial conditions must also be right for ventilation and distance,” said Schaft.

According to the Thuringian Ministry of Science, only some of the universities in the Free State currently offer their students corona tests. There is also no compulsory test. "The students can of course take advantage of the free test offers in the university cities," said a spokesman for the ministry. He also pointed out that there are currently very few students attending face-to-face events at universities.

However, there could be more exceptions soon.

In the course of a planned specification of the Federal Infection Protection Act, practical training components at universities are to be partially exempted from the federal emergency brake.

If the incidence is above the value of 165 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week, face-to-face courses are actually no longer possible.

With the planned exceptions, however, this would no longer apply to laboratory internships, for example.

Shaft welcomed the planned changes.

“That is the right step, but in my opinion it does not release the universities from finding solutions to ensure the highest possible level of security for teachers and students at face-to-face events,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Science, universities would have to pay for their own test offers and masks from their own budgets.

There is no compulsory test for university employees, but entry to university exams is prohibited if no negative test can be presented.

As employers, universities must offer their employees quick tests or self-tests twice a week.
