Pope Francis called this Sunday for an end to the violence in Jerusalem.
“Violence only breeds violence.
Let's stop these clashes ”, launched the Sovereign Pontiff, during a Sunday message after prayer.
On Saturday, new clashes left more than 90 injured in the Holy City.
The Argentine Pope called on the parties to ensure “that the multireligious and multicultural identity of the holy city can be respected and that brotherhood can prevail”.
The tension remains palpable Sunday in East Jerusalem, an area of the holy city annexed by Israel where the worst clashes recorded in years between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli police have left several hundred injured in recent evenings, rekindling fears of conflagration.
On Friday evening, more than 220 people, mostly Palestinians, were injured in clashes on the Mosques esplanade between Israeli police and Palestinian worshipers gathered for iftar, the fast-breaking meal of Ramadan.
