Berlin (dpa) - According to a newspaper report, the state purchase premium for electric cars is experiencing rapidly increasing demand.

In the first four months, almost one billion euros, more money than in 2020 as a whole, was paid out for the premium, as reported by the Rheinische Post, citing data from the responsible Federal Office for Economics and Export Control (Bafa).

Accordingly, the number of rewards applied for for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles with a combined electric combustion engine between January and April totaled just under 174,000.

After four months, the number of funding applications reached two thirds of the previous year's level.

The number of applications in April was 45,702, the third highest since the program began, the report said.

"With the innovation bonus, the federal government is offering a strong incentive that will appeal to people," quoted the newspaper Bafa President Torsten Safarik.

The federal government doubled its share of funding in July 2020.

In total, he spent more than 650 million euros on this last year.

The subsidy is to remain in place until 2025.

In principle, including the manufacturer's share of funding, up to 9,000 euros for battery-only vehicles and up to 6750 euros for hybrids are possible.
