Incumbent Olaf Tauras from the CDU has four opposing candidates.
The Hamburg management consultant Tobias Bergmann is entering the race for the SPD.
The Greens have called up their parliamentary group leader in the council, Sven Radestock.
Other applicants are the non-party Memet Celik and the NPD councilor Mark Proch.
Lord Mayor Tauras has headed the administration of the fourth largest city in Schleswig-Holstein with 80,000 inhabitants since 2009.
Around 64,000 people are entitled to vote.
